Overview: Fully embrace the challenge by switching to a basic phone for 30 days.
Either use a new number, port your old number, or forward your calls to stay connected while experiencing this true digital detox.
Getting Started:
Receive a complimentary flip phone from Flip for 30 or purchase your own
device.
Prepare for the challenge by identifying essential apps and services on your
smartphone and finding alternatives. Take time to go through your smartphone
apps to identify essential tools you use daily.
If purchasing a phone independently, consider prepaid plans to avoid long-term contracts.
Make a list of important contacts and ensure they know how to reach you
on your new number.
Technical Guidance: Here are three approaches on how to manage your phone swap.
Call Forwarding
AT&T:
1. Dial *21* followed by the 10-digit phone number you want to
forward calls to, then press #. Wait for the confirmation tone.
2. To disable, dial #21# and wait for the confirmation tone.
Verizon:
1. Dial *72 followed by the 10-digit phone number you want to forward
calls to, then press the call button. Listen for the confirmation
message.
2. To disable, dial *73 and listen for the confirmation message.
T-Mobile:
1. Dial **21* followed by the 10-digit number you want to forward calls
to, and then press #. Wait for the confirmation tone.
2. To disable, dial ##21# and wait for the confirmation tone
Considerations for Outgoing Calls and Incoming Texts:
Outgoing Call Number: Outgoing calls from your flip phone will display
the flip phone number. Inform important contacts about your temporary
number.
Text Forwarding Options: Use services like IFTTT to set up text
forwarding or auto-responses explaining how to reach you.
2. Swapping SIM Cards:
Swapping SIM cards allows you to move your active line to a different
device. If you swap a SIM card from a smartphone to a flip phone, and
vice versa, here’s what you need to consider:
Ensure both devices use the same SIM card size.
When moving a SIM card from a smartphone to a flip phone, the flip
phone will take over the primary line. Insert a compatible SIM card
into the smartphone to maintain service on a different number.
Some features like data services may require manual configuration
on the new device. For example, you may need to update APN
settings for mobile data to work correctly on the new device.
Be aware that the flip phone may not support all smartphone
features, and vice versa, so consider your essential needs before
swapping.
For iPhone 14 or later and for some new Samsung phones there are no physical SIM cards. You will need to order a physical SIM card by going into a carrier store (i.e Verizon) or order over the phone. Once you have the physical SIM card you will be able to activate your line in a SIM and carrier compatible device.
3. Third-Party Number Services:
Consider porting your number to a service like Google Voice for long-term
flexibility in call routing. This allows you to forward calls to both your
smartphone and flip phone or to your office. However, porting your number
is not recommended for the 30-day challenge due to the time and effort
involved, including potential snags and delays.

1. Call Forwarding:
AT&T:
1. Dial *21* followed by the 10-digit phone number you want to
forward calls to, then press #. Wait for the confirmation tone.

Considerations for Outgoing Calls and Incoming Texts:

Text Forwarding Options: Use services like IFTTT or similar services for

2. Swapping SIM Cards:
Swapping SIM cards allows you to move your active line to a different

3. Third-Party Number Services:
Consider using Google Voice for long-term call management. Porting your number allows for flexible call routing but is not recommended for the 30-day challenge due to the time required, including potential snags and delays.
Hybrid Mode Flexibility:
The goal is to find a balance that works for you. You can choose to keep your
smartphone in the car, use it for travel, or limit its use to work hours. This
challenge is about pushing yourself to evaluate your needs and limit your
smartphone use as much as possible.
Half Flip - Click to Expand Guide
Overview: Transition to a basic phone with limited app capabilities, such as WhatsApp.
This option provides the necessary functionality while still promoting a significant
reduction in smartphone dependency.
Getting Started:
Purchase a basic phone that is able to have the essential apps you require.
Set up your phone with essential apps.
Configure your provided basic phone with the active line for the challenge.
If purchasing a phone independently, consider prepaid plans to avoid long-term
contracts.
Phone Options:
Recommended phones with limited app capabilities, such as the CAT flip phone
with limited app installation.
Advantages of Half Flip over Lite Mode:
Even though the flip phone has some app capabilities, it significantly
reduces distractions compared to a smartphone. The smaller screen size
and limited features of flip phones reduce the likelihood of engaging in
distracting activities.
Supporting Research:
Studies have shown that the design of smartphones, with their large screens and
notification systems, is intended to keep users engaged and can lead to higher
levels of distraction compared to basic phones.
Lite Mode - Click to Expand Guide
Overview: Simplify your smartphone experience with an app that limits its capabilities to just talk and text, or as needed. This approach helps reduce distractions and promotes mindful usage while retaining some smartphone functionality.
Getting Started:
Install and configure minimalist apps such as "Minimalist Phone"
Consider using services like GenTech for filtering and management services.
Why Use Minimalist Apps or GenTech:
Minimalist Apps: These apps restrict functionality to essential services like
calling and texting, reducing the temptation to use other distracting apps.
GenTech Services: For those who find self-managing difficult, GenTech provides a managed service that locks and controls smartphone usage, making it easier to
adhere to the challenge.
Lite Mode Caution :
Self-managing can be difficult. We recommend trying other challenge levels if
possible, but understanding some people's circumstances may prevent them
from doing so.
